Recently, the federal government, at the behest of two senators, has begun looking into whether coal companies owe more taxes.

The federal government and its auditors seem determined to find more revenue from supposed unpaid coal taxes, and we have to wonder: Why does our government spend so much time and effort punishing an industry that it could instead help give a much-needed boost to the economy?
